Malcom Crowe is a child psychologist who receives an award on the same night that he is visited by a very unhappy ex-patient. After this encounter, Crowe takes on the task of curing a young boy with the same ills as the ex-patient. This boy "sees dead people". Crowe spends a lot of time with the boy (Cole) much to the dismay of his wife. Cole's mom is at her wit's end with what to do about her son's increasing problems. Crowe is the boy's only hope.

Nos Estados Unidos, o filme liderou o ranking semanal de público durante 6 semanas, sendo ainda a 2ª maior bilheteria de 1999 nos EUA, perdendo apenas para Star Wars: Episódio 1 - A Ameaça-fantasma. No Brasil, o filme foi líder absoluto de público, tendo liderado o ranking semanal por mais de 2 meses e levando aos cinemas mais de 4 milhões de pessoas, tornando-se o filme que mais expectadores teve em 1999.
Mãe superprotetora
O ator Haley Joel Osment foi impedido por sua mãe de assistir ao filme por um motivo simples, a censura era 14 anos. Poderia ser que as cenas impressionassem o garoto, que na época tinha 11 anos de idade, por isso Haley não teve a oportunidade de se ver nas telas.
